Solar Panels in Tampa, FL | KIN Home Solar Installer

Solar installation in Tampa, Florida

Tampa's solar installer. TECO territory. In-house crews, 880+ reviews, $0 down options.

Why Tampa homeowners are going solar right now

Tampa Electric has raised rates four times in the past twelve months. Over five years, TECO bills have climbed 82%. The Florida PSC approved more increases through 2030.

At 20 cents per kilowatt-hour, a typical Tampa home pays about $350 a month to TECO. A properly sized solar system covers 80–100% of that consumption. Once your panels are up, TECO's next rate announcement isn't your problem anymore.

Tampa gets 5.5 peak sun hours a day. That's solid production year-round — your system is working in December, not just July.

TECO net metering

TECO offers full retail net metering under Florida law. When your panels produce more than you're using, the surplus goes to the grid and credits your bill at the same rate you'd pay for power. Run the AC hard in August — your bill can still come in near zero.

One thing that doesn't go away: the fixed customer charge on your TECO bill. It's there regardless of what your panels produce. But the consumption charge — the big number — drops fast.

Permitting: Hillsborough County solar permits go through Hillsborough County Building Services. Typical timeline is 10–21 business days. KIN pulls the permit and handles all inspection scheduling. You don't call anyone.

The process

  1. Free home assessment — roof, shade, and usage
  2. System design sized to your actual TECO consumption
  3. Permit filed with Hillsborough County Building Services
  4. Installation day — KIN's own crew, KIN's equipment, no subcontractors
  5. TECO interconnection and Permission to Operate
  6. Production monitoring from your phone

Most Tampa installs run 60–90 days from signed contract to Permission to Operate.

Florida incentives that still apply in Tampa

Sales tax exemption: Solar equipment is exempt from Florida's 6% sales tax. On a $30,000 system, that's $1,800 you don't pay.

Property tax exemption: The added home value from solar is excluded from Florida property tax assessments. Your home is worth more. Your tax bill doesn't move.

TECO net metering: Full retail credit for every kilowatt-hour you send back to the grid. Credits roll month to month.

Federal ITC: The 30% residential federal tax credit expired December 31, 2025. It doesn't apply to new residential installs in 2026. If you go with a lease or PPA, the commercial 48E credit still applies — the financing company captures it and passes part of the benefit through lower monthly rates. That credit requires construction to begin by July 4, 2026. If lease or PPA is what you're looking at, the clock matters.

Common questions from Tampa homeowners

Does solar still make sense with TECO's net metering?

Yes — more than ever. At 20 cents per kWh, every kilowatt-hour you generate saves you more than in most other Florida markets. Every TECO rate increase makes your solar math look better in hindsight.

What happens during hurricane season?

KIN uses racking rated for Florida's wind requirements — panels installed to code are tested to 160+ mph. Battery storage is worth considering in Tampa; it keeps critical loads running during outages, which aren't uncommon after a major storm.

How long until I break even?

At $350/month and 20 cents/kWh, most Tampa homeowners see payback on a cash purchase in 7–9 years. Lease and PPA options deliver day-one savings with no upfront cost — different math, but no waiting.

Will my TECO bill go to zero?

Most months, close. The fixed customer charge stays. But the consumption charge — the large variable number — drops 80–100% depending on system size and your usage patterns.

How does TECO interconnection work?

After installation, KIN submits the interconnection application to TECO. TECO inspects and approves. Once you have Permission to Operate, the system turns on. We run the whole process — you don't make any calls.

Financing

  • $0 down lease or PPA — fixed monthly payment, often below your current TECO bill
  • Solar loan — own the system, build equity (GoodLeap, LightReach, Enfin, Skylight)
  • Cash — lowest lifetime cost, fastest payback
